Web vs Mobile App: When to Build What
A short guide to deciding whether to invest in a responsive web app, a native mobile app, or both—and in what order.
There’s no single right answer, but a few principles help.
Start with web when – You need broad reach, SEO matters, or your users are mostly on desktop (e.g. internal tools, dashboards). A responsive web app gets you in front of users quickly and is easier to iterate on. You can add a mobile app later if usage and feedback justify it.
Prioritise mobile when – The core experience is on-the-go (e.g. ride-hailing, delivery, field apps), you need device features (camera, GPS, push), or your audience expects an app store presence. Native or cross-platform (e.g. React Native) can be the right first step.
Both – Many products end up with both: web for marketing and signup, mobile for daily use. Build the channel that drives the most value first, then expand.
Order of operations – Validate with a single platform (often web or a simple MVP app). Add the second when you have evidence of demand and a clear use case.
